Chapter Eighteen

HADES

I watch from a distance, which seems to be my new purpose in life.

Watching.

Waiting.

Burning a slow, agonizing death as the woman I love lives a life without me.

I lift my cigarette to my lips, inhaling a heavy drag as I lean back in the seat of my car, watching Vivianna from a distance.

She has Adrianna in one of those small swings that holds a baby so she doesn’t fall out. Adrianna’s face beams, lighting up the entire park, and I can’t help the smile pulling at the corner of my lips.

Vivianna leans in close to her every time Adrianna swings back toward her, smiling broadly as she has fun with her daughter.

It’s a vision. A perfect painting that I internally capture in my mind for the rest of time.

I don’t know where the fucker is, but he’s truly missing out on one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever seen.

They swing for so long, and I can guarantee Vivianna’s arms are bone-tired by the time she grabs the plastic chains of the swing, stopping Adrianna’s swing. She grabs her out, swinging her around before holding her close and giving her a billion kisses on the neck and cheeks.

Adrianna’s face turns bright red, her face split in two with a large belly laugh. I can hear it from here, and it does something to my heart.

She keeps Adrianna clutched in one of her arms, grabbing the stroller with the other as she starts walking toward a bench.

Time to go.

I turn off my Jeep, stubbing my cigarette out before slipping out of the car. Shoving my hands in my pockets, I walk across the street, staring at Vivianna, who is completely unaware of her surroundings as she settles onto a bench, plopping Adrianna down in her lap.

I sit down next to her, inhaling her rosy scent, and only then does she look over at me.

“Hi, Hades,” she whispers, seemingly not at all shocked by my presence.

I tilt my head to the side. “You knew I was here.”

She doesn’t look at me, keeping her gaze on her daughter. “I could feel you.” She says it with such simplicity, as if our connection is known to the universe.

I understand it, I feel it, and I agree with it.

Our connection is felt. Even with the distance between us, I can always feel her.

I knew she wasn’t at the airport. I knew she was at the Greyhound station.

I know everything about her, because our souls are essentially one.

“How are you?” I ask, averting our conversation from what is already known. It’s me who wants to act on it, it’s her who runs from it.

“I’m okay,” she says quietly, and I can instantly feel something is off.

“What’s wrong, Vivianna?” I clip, turning toward her.

She shakes her head, slouching down slowly.

I grab her arm, a current of electricity rolling through us at that simple touch. “Tell me,” I growl.

She draws in a shaky breath. “It’s just hard sometimes, you know? Sometimes I feel so alone.”

My eyes narrow. “You have Princeton.
